Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Do you need to follow any special diet while on the medication?
    • We always advise a healthy and sustainable diet. While on the medication you want to ensure that you are eating enough protein to help preserve muscle mass as you lose weight. To also drink enough fluids during this time period.
  • Is there anything that you can do or take for the nausea associated with the medication?
    • For patients experiencing nausea, we always recommend to commence with dietary modifications first. For the first 48hrs after an injection try to avoid foods that can cause reflux such as spicy foods, greasy/fried/oily foods, alcohol, caffeine, full fat dairy products (cheese, whole milk, butter), heavy sauces (gravy, Alfredo), acidic foods such as tomatoes based. If you are still experiencing bothersome nausea after making these changes then we can consider over the counter medications such as tums or prescribe zofran for a brief period of time.
  • Is there a best time of the day to take the medication?
    • There is no specific time of the day that will make the medication work best but some individuals find giving the injection before bed helps prevent some of the side effects such as nausea and reflux.
  • What happens if I miss a dose?
    • There is no reactions or concerns if a dose is missed. We would have you administer it the following day, and just readjust your weekly injection to the new day.
  • Can I exercise while on the medication?
    • Yes, we encourage healthy exercise to help make the weight loss sustainable especially once you come off the medication.
  • What happens when I reach my goal weight?
    • It will be an individualized approach in terms of coming off the medication right away or gradually over time. As you approach your goal weight, let our team know so we can prepare your own personal plan for success.
  • Will I gain the weight back after stopping the medication?
    • If you make the lifestyle changes in diet and exercise you should keep the excess weight off and stay within a healthy BMI.
